The Ondo state gubernatorial elections has been a success story so far, though there have been incidences that mildly marred the electoral process in the state.

Voters in their numbers, marched to the polls today, November 26, to elect a new governor that would take over from Olusegun Mimiko, whose tenure expires in February 2017.

Mr Eyitayo Jegede, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of flooding his constituency in Akure with malfunctioning card readers in order to stop his supporters from voting.

Jegede made the accusation after casting his vote at his polling unit in the Cathedral area of Akure, the Ondo state capital.

He said he was glad that he was reinstated as a candidate but was unhappy that many of the card reader brought to his constituency in Akure were faulty.

He said he was concerned why it was taking INEC so long to replace the malfunctioning card readers. He called on his supporter to stay on the queues and make sure they vote.

In the same vein, one of the card readers used by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the on-going Ondo state governorship election failed to capture the biometrics of Governor Olusegun Mimiko.

The incident happened at Ward 7, Unit 21, Ondo West local government area, where the governor cast his ballot.

Besides the faulty card-readers, some destruction of property was also recorded. Properties worth millions of naira were destroyed on Friday, November 25 at the Owo residence of Chief Jamiu Ekungba, an APC governorship aspirant who lost out in the September 3 primaries in Ondo state, by armed thugs.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of being unready for the Ondo election.

In a statement released on Saturday, November 26, PDP said the election was plagued by irregularities which it believed were avenues for which the electoral body would turn the polls in favour of another party.

The party wondered why for instance, INEC did not provide backup card readers for the many that malfunctioned during today’s election.

Meanwhile, angry voters in Ondo state have heatedly rejected an attempt by a party agent to induce them to vote for his party in the ongoing Ondo election.

A video footage showed a party chieftain who was surrounded by security officials being tackled by voters for trying to share money to electorate.

According to Ondo Television, the party chieftain is All Progressives Congress (APC’s) Tunji Light Ariyo.

The event occurred at St Thomas polling centre in Akure.

Some hoodlums have shattered the ballot box and hijacked the ballot papers.

This is coming barely 24 hours after two persons lost their lives during an outbreak of violence.

Owo is the hometown of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN.

A combined team of security officials has arrested four young men while reportedly attempting to snatch ballot boxes at the Igbokoda, headquarters of Ilaje local government.

The men who  arrested and handcuffed have been taken away  in a police patrol vehicle to the Divisional Police Office in Igbokoda.

The suspects were between the ages of 25 and 30.
