Outrage has trailed the statement credited to the minister of youths and sports, Solomon Dalung, that the failure to pay the Super Falcons who recently won the just-concluded CAF African Women Cup of Nations in Cameroon was because the federal government did not expect the team to win the competition.
The minister was reported to have made the statement on Thursday, December 8, when he spoke with journalists at the presidential villa, Abuja amidst continued protests by members of the team over their unpaid allowances.
“Don’t forget that nobody even knew the team will emerge victorious.
“If we were confident they will emerge victorious, all the federation would have done is to plan for process of participation and entitlement.
“It is already established in sports tradition, when you win this is what you are entitled to.
“The situation is highly unfortunate and I don’t like it. These girls have given confidence to women who want to embrace sports, so this will go a long way in killing this laudable achievement. It is unfortunate but we will make sure the right thing is done," the minister was quoted as saying in a Punch reports dated, December 8, 2016.
But the players have demanded that the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) offset the N238.05m accumulated bonuses which they are being owed.
They have threatened that if President Muhammadu Buhari refuses to address their grievances, they would embark on protest on the streets of Abuja.
But Solomon Dalung and officials of the ministry and the NFF have to pleaded with the players to call off the protest.
In reaction to the Falcons allowance saga, some Nigerians have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately the sack the minister of sports for his excuses on the inability to pay the team.
The concerned citizens have described the whole episode as an embarrassment to the nation.
One of those who bashed the government for its inability to pay the female team is Reno Omokri who said Dalung’s statement that the government does not expect us to win is an indication that federal government has a defeatist mentality!
Read some comments of Nigerian on the issue below:
Seye: "He said: “Don’t forget that nobody even knew the team will emerge victorious. “If we were confident they will emerge victorious, all the federation would have done is to plan for process of participation and entitlement.'' From this statement we can infer.
1. That the Minister did not expect our girls winning- classic MO of the administration. FAILURE.
2. That if the girls had lost, they would not be paid a dime.
Please tell me how this man is still a Minister?
Arise: "Please explain to me why this nincompop was appointed minister after president Buhari wasted six months searching for men/women with integrity. Fish rottens from the head!"
FineBoy: "Reckless Statement by a Minister. You planned to fail?"
TOBBY: "Buhari should as a matter of national urgency send the minister of sports to sambisa forest cause the man is destroying the only thing that gives Nigerians joy which is our football. Such comment can only come from a man who never knew success in his entire life. The sport minister just told the world that Nigeria football under him go to major events to fail. Another disgrace. WE ARE PRODUCTS OF OUR DECISIONS."
MDG2020: "Buhari and his band of ministers are complete public disgrace!."
"That you did not know they will win, therefore you did not prepare for there benefits. So you made preparations with millions and sent them out to go fail? Common, are these men living in realities or in euphoria? The same way buhari never prepared for governance, yet was a former military governor, minister, head of state , three times presidential candidate under four different political parties, yet came in fumbling."
MammanJiyaVatsa: "Pathetic statement from a serving minister...Nigeria is bound to fail as a country, that`s the message of this stupid minister - he should be fired, period."
Geo: "Buhari and his administration are a failure. They never even prepared for governance, despite Buhari's 4 failed attempts at presidency. Dalong must be removed from office."
Henry: "This is the most irresponsible statement I have ever heard from a government officials. This is no minister and must be sacked without delay, I am a lover of Buhari and no one can change that but I refused to support this irresponsible statement if it is true."
Olawale: "Rubbish from useless Minister. Why couldn't you envisaged they might win the trophy? A team that had won 7 out 9 already. More so, is it not reasonable enough to prepare ahead for all possibilities? Beside that, is it only when they win gold they are entitled to any bonus? Mr. Minister $ the so NFF, undoubtedly you are just there to mess up this country $ kill people's morale."
Okosi:"Buhari should sack Solomon Dalung with immediate effect, the statement accredited to him for the Super Falcons is an embarrassment to the FG. This goes to show why Nigeria is in recession, a bunch of ignoramus and blockhead ministers that got nothing to offer this nation. FOOLS...."
What is your view on this, should Solomon Dalung be sacked for his comments on the inability to pay the Falcons?
