JUST IN: Ohanaeze Ndigbo elect new President-general as Nnamdi Kanu remains behind bars

- The former minister of information has emerged as the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo

- Chief Nnia Nwodo got 242 votes to beat his only remaining contender

- The new president-general has pledged to call a meeting of the IPOB and Pro-Biafra groups

Chief Nnia Nwodo, the former minister for information, has emerged the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

Chief Nwodo won with 242 votes to beat his closest condender, Prof Chiweyite Ejike who got 13 votes.

Prof Chiweyite who was the Vice Chancellor of the now defunct, Anambra State University of Science and Technology, (ASUTECH).

The contestants include: Chief Nnia Nwodo, Commodore Alison Madueke (rtd), Prof. Chiwete Ejike, Dr. Simon Otuanya and Chief Joel Enugwu.

However, in a dramatic move on Tuesday, January 10, before voting commenced, Ezugwu and Ortuanya announced their decision to step down for Nwodo. Both of them described Nwodo as a man of wisdom and competence and well qualified for the position.

According to Vanguard, Alison Madueke, who had earlier declared interest and purchased a form for the position of President-General did not present himself for screening.

The reports have it that he stepped down following pressure from some quarters. The election was held at the Ohanaeze secretariat in Enugu.

Enugu, Ebonyi, Anambra, Imo, Abia, Delta and Rivers, the the seven Igbo speaking states, as well as other affiliate groups, including pro-Biafra groups, the MASSOB, and the IPOB participated with some number of delegates.

The victorious Nwodo said he was ready to die for the cause of Ndigbo and assured of his readiness to entrench transparency and accountability in running the Ohanaeze affairs.

He said: “I will not use this position to make money; if I am asked to die for you, I will do so."

Nwodo also pledged to call a meeting of the IPOB and other pro-Biafra groups, stressing that “if we allow them to be killed on daily basis, their blood will be on our head.”

Meanwhile, an earlier report indicated that there was anxiety in the Enugu state chapter of Ohanaeze Ndigbo because of the endorsement of former minister of information, Chief John Nwodo by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
