Toddler, grand-mum die in Ondo fire incident

A 60-year-old woman and her four-year-old grand-daughter have lost their life in a fire incident in Akoko Northeast local government area of Ondo state, The Nation reports.

According to the report, the duo were reportedly burnt to death when a bungalow near the Ikare Fire Station went up in flames in the night.

The woman who slept alone in the room with the child, was said to have struggled to escape with her grand daughter but to no avail.

An eye witness quoted in the report, Precious Oluboyo also said neighbours tried to put out the fire, but they were not successful.

He alleged that a candle light caused the inferno, adding that there was no electricity in area since last year.

A community leader, Chief Saliu Okola blamed the state government for not providing fire fighting equipment in the area.

On his part, the Vicar-in-charge of St Stephen Anglican Cathedral Church, Ikare-Akoko, where the woman was a communicant, Ven Joshua Idowu, described her as a devout Christian.

Meanwhile, a midnight inferno that occurred this weekend consumed one of the largest markets in Delta state, destroying properties and goods worth millions of naira.

The market located in Sapele, one of the largest cities in the state, was brought down as the goods kept in the stores were all consumed.
