About the time he turned 2 weeks, Ali Yakubov’s body started showing verses from the Koran, which seemed to appear and then fade every few days. The verses were pink-brown in color, and were scattered across the baby’s legs, back, arms and face. "Be grateful to Allah" could be clearly seen on Ali’s right leg.

The curious -and to some, miraculous- phenomenon attracted tourists, scholars and journalists alike. Some foreign journalists managed to see a single letter after the other verses had vanished.

Sagid Murtazaliyev, head of the Kizlyar region, which is located north of Dagestan’s capital, Makhachkala, commented that "the fact that this miracle happened here is a signal to us to take the lead and help our brothers and sisters find peace.” This region is signaled as the place where Islam in Russia started.

Dagestan is populated by around 3 million people, who speak over 30 languages. It boasts what some claim is Russia's oldest city, the walled city of Derbent.

The blue-eyed baby received around to 2,000 pilgrims per day at some point, and his family’s house, located in the town of Kizlyar, became a shrine.

Imams constantly took photos of Ali’s changing Arabic scripts on his skin. Much speculation went on about theses strange writings, with many claiming they are sign of divine intervention in this violence-ridden area, where Islamic extremists have gained ground in recent years.

Similar kinds of “miracles” have also appeared in other religions, such as the famous Christian weeping icons, stigmata and Jesus’ bleeding wounds in hands and feet.

Ali, who was dubbed as a "miracle child" is now mostly hidden from public by his parents. Apparently, an oligarch built a new house for him and his family.
