A lawyer based in Osun state has accused the Nigeria police of abducting his client Adegoke Osunbuyi from an Osun state High Court.
Rasheed Kolawole said his client was abducted on Wednesday, February 22, and is currently being detained by the Area M police command in Idumu, Lagos state.
Addressing journalists on Friday, Kolawole said some police men from the Lagos command defied an existing court order restraining them from further arresting the suspect.
An Ilesa High Court division has issued an order restraining the inspector general of police, the commissioner of police Lagos state, police area commander Area M, Austin Achika and Segun Omoyelu from harassing or detaining Osunbuyi and Busuyi Fanibi.
Kolawole in disregard for the court order, the police officers, laid siege on the court premises and abducted Osunbuyi when he stepped out to answer the call of nature.
The incident Kolawole said occurred while the judge was already seated on the matter.
Osunbuyi and Fanibi were arrested by the Area M police command over allegation of collecting money under false pretense.
The duo were accused of receiving N2.2 million from Omoyelu to procure a Highlander Jep
But Kolawole said: “Upon the recipient of the N2.2 Million, Omoyelu was briefed that as result of the devaluation of the Nigeria currency, the amount could not procure the said vehicle.
He instructed Osunbuyi to deposit the available money with the commitment to balance the additional cost incurred, the vehicle as at today is still in Cotonu and instead of redeeming his pledge, he has been harassing Osunbuyi with police from Area M command.”
“My two clients were severally arrested in January by the police in Ilesa Area Command and Area M command, Lagos, without charging them to court, Omoyelu has been using his influence in the police to exploit and harassed my clients over a civil contractual agreement that was floated by Omoyelu himself.
“The police impunity compelled us to approach Ilesa high court for the enforcement of my clients fundamental human right in which we secured an experte injunction against arrest and detention,” he said.
He also alleged that on February 5, the police from Area M tried to beat him up when they invaded the hotel of one of his clients, Fanibi.
“I was almost beaten up, they even described the court order as useless order that would not be obeyed, they ransacked the hotel and drained all the drinks in the freezer of my client.”
However, following the incident, the court adjourned the matter to Tuesday March 21 for hearing on the substantive matter.
