BREAKING: Senate goes into closed session as Customs boss arrives in mufti

The Punch is reporting that Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service Col. Hameed Ali (retd.) has defied the order of the Nigerian Senate that he appear before the upper house of legislature in the uniform of the revenue-generating outfit.

Ali was said to have been sighted in the National Assembly Complex today, Thursday, March 16, in a white tradition attire.

This is contradictory to the directive of the Senate which had insisted severally that he must appear before the lawmakers in uniform depicting his rank as the DG.

Recall that there was uproar in the Senate on Wednesday, March 15 after Ali failed to show up but sent a letter instead saying he could appear before the lawmakers because he was bereaved.

But the Senators kicked and called on the Senate leadership to compel Ali to appear before the upper house of legislature on Thursday, March 16 or risk being arrested.

Some of the senators who kicked at Ali's decision said the institution cannot afford to join issues with him but will compel him to do as the lawmakers want.

Senator Sekibo moved the motion that Ali be forced to appear before the Senate as provided for in the constitution. He was seconded by deputy senate president Ike Ekweremadu.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, the lawmakers entered a closed door session at 10:45am, shortly after the plenary began.

It was not clear at press time if the closed session is directly related to Hameed Ali's defiance or not.

The drama has got Nigerians wondering what governance in the country has turned into. Some believe that Ali is disrespecting the country and not just the Senate.
