Government to begin work on Kashimbilla hydro power plant this year - Fashola

- The government would begin work on the 40 megawatts Kashimbila Hydro Power Plant in Taraba this year

- Efforts are also being made to complete Mambilla Power Station also in Taraba

- Babatunde Fashola said progress has been made in terms of project planning for the Kashimbilla project

Work would begin on the 40 megawatts Kashimbila Hydro Power Plant in Taraba this year.

This was disclosed on Sunday, March 19, by the minister of works, power and housing, Babatunde Fashola, while speaking with newsmen in Maiduguri after a tour of projects in the North East.

He said government was also making efforts to complete the Mambilla power station in Taraba, while adding that the contractor is back to site after he was mobilised, Daily Trust reports.

Fashola said: “For Kashimbilla project, we have made progress in terms of project planning.

“We are in the final stage of pricing and we expect that we will start work this year.”

He explained that preparatory work is ongoing and the ministry is considering the best route to move the equipment to site.

The minister stated that estate valuers had been engaged to value the whole site where the plant will be constructed for easy compensation of the natives.

Reacting to the news, some Nigerians have expressed surprise that the Mambila hydropower project has not taken off.

However, some are happy that the project will be starting soon, describing it as good news.

Recall that Nigeria welcomed a loan from India for Nigeria’s power sector in August 2016. While receiving a delegation led by the Indian High Commissioner in Nigeria Nagabhushana Reddy, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had called for more active engagement between both countries.

According to Nigerian the minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, Buhari's ministers are working.
