6 senators who stood against confirmation of Buhari's REC nominees

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday, March 28, threatened that they would not confirm President Muhammadu Buhari's nominees for the position of Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The Senators are angry that Buhari is allowing Ibrahim Magu to continue to act as chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) even after they rejected him.

The lawmakers who said they were waiting to hear from the president Magu's rejection while resolving to stand down the confirmation for two weeks until things are sorted out.

NAIJ.com gathered that the call for the Senate to step down the confirmation request of the of 27 REC nominees was championed by six senators and they are;

1. Senator Peter Nwaoboshi

Nwaoboshi representing Delta North senatorial district suggested that the Senate may step down the confirmation since they are acting and Buhari’s appointees disrespect the Senate.

2. Senator Matthew Uroghide

Uroghide representing Edo South senatorial district asked that the request be stood down. He cited cites Magu's case, saying after their decision he is still acting chairman of the EFCC.

3. Senator Samuel Anyanwu

Anyanwu representing Imo East senatorial district said: "If the Senate is ridiculed our institution has been ridiculed, we will try as much as possible to promote this institution."

4. Senator Francis Alimikhena

According to Alimikhena representing Edo North senatorial district, Magu is terrorizing the Senate because he was disqualified. “Let’s hear from Buhari on Magu's case,” he added.

5. Senator Ike Ekweremadu

On his part, the deputy Senate president said there is a time frame to stand down the confirmation. He asked the Senate president Bukola Saraki to convey the feelings of the lawmakers to Buhari.

6. Senate president Bukola Saraki

Saraki pleaded with the senators and urged them to just stand down the confirmation of the appointments for a week but they settled for two weeks.

Meanwhile some Nigerians are of the opinion that the Senate is against Magu because they want to obstruct the war against corruption which is very important to the Buhari-led administration.
