Blow whistle against police officers who violate your rights, police authorize Nigerians

- Nigeria police authorities are worried over incessant cases of violation of rights of Nigerians by police officers

- Delta state command of the police has asked Nigerians to blow whistle against any officer and necessary action will be taken

- Human rights group in the state has been on the neck of the police authorities to bring the rank and file to order

Delta state commissioner of police, Ibrahim Zannah, has urged Nigerians to blow the whistle against any police officer who violates their rights and compels them to part with money contrary to the law.

This is following continuous calls that police on the highway are compelling commercial vehicle users, motorcycle and tricycle riders to part with money even when they have fulfilled all obligations of law required for highway users.

The commissioner who felt disturbed with the reports reaching his office from human rights groups intimating him of the action of the police on the highway, a development which is soiling the image of the police, gave the order in his office in Asaba on Wednesday.

My priority is to defend human rights. If I do anything, I’m derailing. If I do otherwise, my job is on the line. I have dismissed one police officer, I have transferred one DPO. I have grounded a whole unit because of actions that are inimical to the profession. I have been able to sanitise the system,” Zanna said.

The police commissioner said contrary to insinuations that the police are not well funded, he said police on the highway are well funded.

Earlier, the group identified the rank and file of the Nigeria Police as the major challenge of the police force in the country.

Chairman of the group, Comrade Prince Kehinde Taiga, told the commissioner that despite the strict directive of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, against mounting road blocks, he said some of the police are still mounting road blocks on the highway and collecting money.

He said even if the driver has all the credentials to prove him and his vehicle road worthy, the police must drill the drivers to extort money from their hands against the provisions of the law.

He said the biggest annoyance of the group is the extortion of innocent drivers who earn little to support their families but police will collect the little money from them.

“Your rank and file officers are destroying your work at the top. Even though your papers are correct, police will drill you to make sure they collect money from you.

“We are seeing what is happening and we are not happy with it. We are calling for a complete change of behavior from the police officers in the state,” Taiga said.
