Editor’s note: President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption war has received both applaud and condemnation from Nigerians. While some people believe the anti-corruption war is yielding good results, others opine that Buhari is only using EFCC to deal with his perceived political enemies.
In an article sent to NAIJ.com, Prof Oyeniran Abioje explains how Nigerian politicians and the so-called clerics contributed to the woes of the country.
‘Bellyful’ politicians and clerics who milk Nigerians in church and mosque always create confusion for the exploited majority. As the President, General Muhammadu Buhari (GMB) flew out of Nigeria to London for an undisclosed health reasons, and undisclosed amount of money, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is financially wealthy at home and abroad, is quoted as telling Nigerians to be praising GMB.
According to him, GMB “has pushed Boko Haram back, saving lives and giving northern Nigeria a chance to breathe again the air of peace and normalcy.”
Tinubu thus overlooked the carnage, genocide, and mass abject poverty that GMB is perpetuating. Negotiation is the only way the northeast can breathe “air of peace and normalcy”, because being “pushed back” is not the same thing as annihilation of Boko Haram (BH).
To free some of the Chibok girls abducted by BH involved intense and sustained dialogue, but GMB is not ready to negotiate for a comprehensive peace with BH.
When it was politically expedient, Tinubu dumped GMB for Jonathan who ordered that Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to announce that Tinubu was free of all the corruption (Boko haram) charges leveled against him.
GMB has just done a similar thing for the Senate President, Bukola Saraki. The Speaker of the House of Reps, Yakubu Dogara has never left anybody in doubt that he is for ‘chop-I-chop’. Hence, Nigeria is as miserable as ever under GMB. I warned GMB to seek peace and not war with Boko Haram (BH) but he was caught by his own trap.
He had swallowed the bait on the hook of Islamic imperialism. Tinubu is asking hungry dogs to be playing with bellyful dogs; asking common Nigerians who are dying from hunger and penury to be praising GMB for perpetuating war, carnage, genocide, and mass abject poverty.
While Tinubu represents bellyful politicians, the leadership of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria represents well fed Christian and Islamic clerics who ask Nigerians to be praying for GMB while they live on prosperity that come not from God but from people indoctrinated and exploited in the name of God.
The assumption of those in privileged position is that GMB is doing wonderfully well, while common people who are dying from hunger and penury are groaning miserably. Under GMB, Boko Haram (corruption) remains the order of the day.
The Senate President said the EFCC has developed cold feet and unable to state how he made false declaration of his own assets. Yet many Kwarans were expecting the EFCC to help them get some excess liquidity from Saraki, their former Governor; 2003-2011.
GMB has done for Saraki what Jonathan did for Tinubu, when all the anti-graft agents gave Tinubu a clean bill of freedom from all corruption charges. How is GMB different from Jonathan? The former is worse because his health and age are also problematic. Has GMB accounted for recovered looted funds, 2015 till date?
