EFCC hits back, files corruption charges against recalled judges

- Two federal high court judges are facing corruption charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)

- The judges were recently recalled by the National Judicial Council (NJC)

- The anti-graft agency filed all the charges at the Lagos state high court

A report by The Cable indicates that the EFCC has filed corruption charges against two Federal High Court judges recalled recently by the NJC.

Last week, the NJC announced the recall of six out of eight judges accused of corruption by the federal government.

According to the council, its decision was based on the fact that the government failed to file charges against five of the judges months after their arrest and suspension.

In response, the government had criticised the decision, and vowed to take action against the judges.

On Thursday, June 8, the EFCC filed 14-count charges of unlawful enrichment against Hyeladzira Nganjiwa, a judge in the Federal High Court, Lagos.

The anti-graft commission alleged that the judge had a significant increase in his assets that he could not reasonably explain in relation to his lawful income.

The EFCC also filed four-count charges of corruption and attempting to pervert the course of justice against Mohammed Yunusa, a judge in the Federal High Court, Lagos.

All the charges were filed at the Lagos state high court.

Meanwhile, Adeniyi Ademola, one of the judges prosecuted by the federal government, was discharged and acquitted of all charges against him by an Abuja high court recently.

Justice Ademola has since resumed sitting.

But the federal government said it would appeal against the judgment of the court.
