Egypt Pardons Political Prisoners

The President of Egypt has pardoned all those arrested during last year’s popular uprising that resulted in the ousting of former leader Hosni Mubarak.

Several thousand people are thought to be still held in prison, either awaiting trial or serving jail sentences.

The pardon applies to all those arrested from the first day of the revolution – 25th of January, 2011 – until the end of June this year, when Mohammed Mursi took office. The only exception will be those charged with murder.

The names of those pardoned must also be published within one month.
