Niger Delta politicians are planning to poison GEJ's godson - CNDYL

- Some Niger Delta youth leaders have accused the south-south zone of the EFCC of acting as a tool in the hands of certain vengeful persons intimidated by George Turnah’s profile

- The group alleges that Turnah’s detractors have also planned the intimidation, browbeating, suffocation and (illegal) arrest of his intimate family members and legal associates

- They call on Nigerians to protest against persecution or assassination of any citizen under the guise of fighting corruption

The Coalition of Niger Delta Youth Leaders (CNDYL) has raised the alarm over an alleged plot to poison George Turnah, the 33-year-old godson of former president Goodluck Jonathan, who is presently in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Leadership reports that Turnah is facing trial before a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt on a 12-count charge bordering on obtaining money by false pretense, money laundering, and abuse of office among others.

He was arrested in Port Harcourt in March this year in connection with the alleged possession of N3bn suspected to be funds siphoned from the NDDC while serving there between 2012 and 2015.

According to the group, the plan to poison the former president’s godson was being hatched by some politicians from the Niger Delta region.

The group claimed that the individuals were threatened by the rising profile of Mr. Turnah in Bayelsa.

It alleged that even though Turnah was granted bail by a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt after pleading not guilty to the charge brought by the EFCC, his detractors were still planning to poison him and instigate his re-arrest by the EFCC after he meets his bail conditions.

In a statement signed by the group’s president, Comrade Okhare Godgift, and the secretary Kelvin Abiye, the group said: “The deadly plot against George Turnah is being sponsored by those who thought his ordeal and persecution would defame, demarket and silence him, but they were ashamed and surprised at the wide spread solidarity and empathy for the 33 year old Ogbia born-Lawyer.”

It further stated: “We are deeply worried that the South-South Zone of EFCC, is allegedly fast becoming a vindictive and willing tool to do the sinister biddings of some vengeful persons intimidated by the rising political profile of Mr. Turnah (MON), under the guise of fighting corruption.

“As a result, words have filtered to us from credible sources that in order to satisfy their overlords and paymasters, following the grant and perfection of bail, another plot they are hatching which is dead on arrival, is the intimidation, brow beating, suffocation and (illegal) arrest of Turnah’s intimate family members and legal associates so as to deny him their warmth and services.”

The group therefore condemned the alleged plan to re-arrest Turner when he appears for trial on June 30.

They said: “We further condemn the planned ambush for the re-arrest of Turnah on the 30th of this month as he appears before the Court for the continuation of his trial.

“Accordingly, we call on the good people of Nigeria, democrats and fellow rights activists to rise and demand that never again should any Nigerian be persecuted or assassinated based on his rising political profile, beliefs and associations, under the guise of fighting corruption."
