Biafra or restructuring will not favor Ebonyi - Gov Umahi

- Governor Umahi notes that Ebonyi state is totally depended on the federal government for allocation

- He laments the lack of investors and very low internally generated revenue in the state

- The governor expresses optimism that the new measures being put to work would be beneficial to Ebonyi state

The governor of Ebonyi state David Umahi, on Wednesday, June 28, declared that the state is opposed to the idea of restructuring the country and the agitation for Biafra.

According to reports, Umahi stated that both would not benefit the people of his state as Ebonyi was not yet economically viable to seek independence.

The governor made his comments while responding to the presentation of a consultant on Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) Dr. Mike Abani, during the state executive council meeting at the Government House, Abakaliki.

According to Governor Umahi, Ebonyi state is totally dependent on the federal allocation, while the internally generated revenue (IGR) is paltry.

He stated: “When the issue of Biafra or restructuring is discussed, my heart jumps because Ebonyi State is not ripe for any.”

“Ask yourself, what is it that we are producing? We totally depend on the federal government for allocation.

“Investors are not coming into the state and our IGR is nothing to write home about, because the idea of an investor is, supposing the allocation that comes from the center stops, how do I get back my money?”

Governor Umahi decried the fact that the residents of the state are over-taxed; yet, the money goes into the pockets of government officials.

Umahi expressed optimism that the problem of IGR leakages in the state would be ended by the new measures being put to work.

He was also optimistic that the measures would aid the fight against corruption.
