Senate set to amend NYSC act, to split service year into two

Legit.ng can authoritatively report that a bill for an act to amend the National Youth Service Corps Act is currently in the Senate.
The bill which seeks to provide for free and compulsory acquisition of vocational skills by corps members and split it into two parts is sponsored by Senator Stella Oduah.
Oduah, a former minister of aviation, is a Peoples Democratic Party member representing Anambra North senatorial district.

The bill went for first reading on November 24, 2015 and second reading on May 17, this year.
Legit.ng gathered that the main aim of the NYSC Bill is to equip Corp members with entrepreneurial skills to enable them build sustainable and profitable businesses after their service year.
The bill seeks to among other things:
1. Prepare Nigerian youths to rediscover their passions, talents and skills and not to dwell on their certificates
2. The bill will further split the service year into two; to be directed towards gaining experience in the work environment and secondly, geared towards free and compulsory acquisition of vocational skills.
3. The objective of the bill is to reduce unemployment among Nigerian graduates after their service year.
4. The bill seeks to develop and place the graduates in the right direction and hence make them useful tools for the transformation of the economy.
Legit.ng gathered that the bill has since being referred to the constitutional review committee for further legislative action.
Similarly, the Nigerian Senate has received massive commendations from Nigerians over the motion adopted which seeks to compel hospitals to treat and provide medical care to gunshot victims without necessarily obtaining a police report.
“Gunshot victims have the rights to be treated, have we established that the victim has done something wrong that deserves to be shot?, If not, we kill innocent people,” sponsor of the bill Senator Monsurat Sunmonu of the All Progressives Congress representing Oyo Central Senatorial District said.
