OPINION: Nigeria’s tomorrow died yesterday, OAU Ife as a case study

Editor’s note: The Acting Chairman of Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu’s style of prosecuting corruption cases has continued to generate mixed reactions among Nigerians. While the Presidency is satisfied with the way and manner Magu goes about arresting looters of public funds, the Senate wants him removed at all cost. And despite that, Magu did not only deal with politicians, he also extended his searchlight to Nigerian universities where some vice-chancellors have been called to answer some questions as regards how funds earmarked for their institutions are spent.

In a message sent to NAIJ.com, Bada Yusuf explains why some past vice-chancellors of Obafemi Awolowo University OAU) should be arrested and prosecuted over alleged misappropriation of funds.

Education is the bedrock of every development, even Ondo state governor, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu attested to this fact while delivering his a lecture at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)’s Faculty of Arts annual lecture.

He also agreed with the fact that every development begins in the higher institutions of the country. However, the triviality of education in Nigeria is not only a core value tool in the hand of government and politicians but also in the hands of the upper class who has failed to associate themselves with the feelings and pains of the common man on the streets.

Nigerians today are clamouring for restructuring but the questions around such rationale are, will this restructuring affects our psychology? Will restructuring amount to better standard of living, reduce poverty, establish better education, limit corruption to manageable standard or flush out corruption in our political system and among the general upper class in all sectors including education? Furthermore, who are the brains behind this advocacy?

This same question goes to the secessionists. It is unfortunate that many Nigerians, both the upper class and lower class see public office as investment to embezzle and abuse human rights rather than institution of selfless service to one’s country. Just like Pius Adesanmi posits in his recent article. There are two sets of Nigerians, those who are in government and those who are waiting to be in government.

The spring of the mechanical art and mystery of educating the reason without stooping to the cultivation of politics and class is the case of academic institutions in Nigeria, youth and politics; upper and lower class citizens which are rooted in poverty, half-freedom and abuse of human rights most especially by those who occupy public office.

OAU is another an institution that is an exact replica of Nigeria, just like the Nigerian Senate who bought cars worth of billions of Naira in the face of recession and mass poverty among Nigerians is calling, cannot endorse Magu as the chairman of Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) is the same way Bamitale Omole led administration of OAU increased the institution tuition fee with over two hundred percent on the basis of upgrading the university facilities; while the university community experienced nothing of such and call for his probe by EFCC.

Unfortunately, EFCC did nothing related to such effect and today, EFCC is fighting his successor Prof Anthony Elujoba for misappropriation of fund.

Mostly, every law is biased by default and always favours the upper class. In Nigeria, it does not just happen by default but by the will of the oppressor supper class with their oppressive power.

Elujoba is being charged for seven count charges in which the summary is misappropriation of over one billion Naira.

Either Elujoba is guilty or not, and either Omole who was accused of similar offence was neither investigated nor charged to court by the almighty EFCC, the fact is that the trial of Elijoba has the undertone of cabals. The question now is, why has EFCC failed to probe the man who was popularly accused of misappropriation of fund and decided to probe the man who did what the oppressor failed to do?.

Although sainthood has nothing to do with corruption just like Abdulsalami Abubakar who handed over power to democratic government might have embezzled Nigeria money but it poses logical question assuming if Abdulsalami was being probed while Olusegun Obasanjo walks freely, Ibrahim Babangida was not

By the rationality of humanity, Elujoba established mutual understanding with all aggrieved bodies in the institution which include the students, NASU and ASUU specifically.

Of course, you should know that the understanding is about spending money and the stabilization of the university academic calendar.

This spending includes paying aggrieved NASU and ASUU members whom EFCC might have referred to as Elujoba’s friends in its charges, upgrading of students’ welfares such as renovation of students’ halls of residence toilets, stabilization of the electricity and flow of water into halls of residence to mention a few. Interestingly, OAU has a full academic session with one or two weeks strike for a long time in the history of OAU.

However, these are elements responsible for consistent strikes on OAU which Omole failed to address but rather resulted to suspension of Students Union activities, rustication/suspension of students, mid semester break which does not happen in any university in the world and other tactics of oppressors.

However, the oppressor supper class has failed to understand that rebellion is human characteristics and has resolved to enjoy the benefits of oppressing the common man.

If Elujoba who listened and adhered to the yearning of the common man in the face of poverty and hunger is jailed and Omole who brutalized human emotion by manufacturing freedom to free-doom and expand the elasticity of poverty is neither investigated nor charge to court, then the common man has no hope and Nigeria has no future.

The sad part of this novel is that the jailing of Elujoba is an attempt to halt the smooth academic calendar and the reviving glory of OAU if Elujoba is jailed and Omole is never probed not to talk of being jailed. There would be agitations again; the steady academic calendar which Elujoba has put in place would be halted as well as the reviving glory of OAU.

This is because there would be a return of the agitation for the rejection of oppressors while the poor students and less care for NASU would be the victim. From all indication, the oppressor supper class is those who sit in the roll of the eminent and forget, they have no children in Nigeria or their family nearly live in Nigeria.

NAIJ.com had previously reported that Ibrahim Magu said that he only needed President Muhammadu Buhari and his vice Professor Yemi Osinbajo's backing to continue as the EFCC boss.

The summary of this is that they neither feel our pains nor have any human feelings, and few among them who try to, are subjected to brutalization under the umbrella of the so called law.
