BREAKING: Riot rocks Apapa as policeman shoots tanker driver dead (photo)

- There is mayhem in Apapa, Lagos state as tanker drivers engage police officer in heavy fight

- A police officer today, July 19, reportedly shot and killed a tanker driver over money

- The protesters have already set ablaze Sterling and Diamond bank in Apapa

Reports reaching Legit.ng indicate that a mob has reportedly set Sterling and Diamond bank in Apapa, Lagos state on fire after a mobile policeman attached to the bank shot a tanker driver dead.

Banks in Apapa are shutting down and evacuating their personnel following the incident by protesting tanker drivers.

An eyewitness who spoke to Legit.ng said the incident started when the tanker driver refused to give the police officer money which led to a heated argument and the officer fired by mistake.

The police officer fled the scene when he realized the driver was dead.

The tanker drivers who were angry chased the officer into the bank where he was been protected by security guards.

The bank’s refusal to give up the policeman provoked the drivers the more. The driver’s colleagues then moved to set the bank ablaze, destroying properties and other valuables.

At the time of this report, policemen from Rapid Response Squad (RRS), anti-riot squad and Area B command, as well as operatives from the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECEOFT have arrived at the scene.

In a previous report by Legit.ng, an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence in Dutse, Jigawa, state, killed a man and injured a police officer after firing several shots on Friday, July 14.

The incident reportedly happened when some officers of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) called NSCDC official for reinforcement after a clash with some members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
