The Nigerian Senate has denied the rumours that the #NotTooYoungToRun Bill has been dropped

Some media reports had suggested that bill was dropped at the end of the recently concluded joint retreat of national legislators on Constitution Review in Lagos.

The reports had sparked reactions and condemnations from civil society groups and youth organisations across the country.

A statement by the Senate on Saturday, July 22 stated that, “The Bill to amend the age requirements to run for office (#NotTooYoungToRun Bill) is still and has always been a part of the Constitution Review process.

“The #NotTooYoungToRun Bill was part of the Report that was laid on the floor of the Senate on Thursday, July 20 by the Chairman of the Constitution Review Committee, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu.

“As directed by the Senate President, the Senate, at its plenary next week Tuesday, will begin consideration of all the Constitution Review Bills — this also includes the #NotToYoungToRunBill.”

Similarly, Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, recently said the bill has not been removed from the constitution amendment report.

Dogara reaffirmed his support for youth inclusion in politics, adding that though the bill was retained, the title was changed.
