FG to kick off north-east rebuilding plan - Osinbajo

- Several areas of the north-east have been ravaged in recent times by the scourge of Boko Haram, and the rebuilding plan is set to refurbish these areas

- To this effect, a meeting was chaired by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa in Abuja with relevant stakeholders including the governor of Borno state and other top government officials

- The rebuilding plan known will cover infrastructural development, security arrangement, health services etc. of various affected towns in the north-east region

- The welfare of Internally Displaced Persons who would be expected to return to newly constructed homes, is also a top priority of the project

The acting president Yemi Osinbajo on Monday July 24, announced that the federal government would soon kick off the implementation for a north-east rebuilding plan.

The announcement was made via the official twitter handle of the acting president, @ProfOsinbajo.

The tweets read: “The FG will soon kick-off the implementation of a comprehensive rebuilding plan for the North-east areas that were ravaged in recent years.

“We will commence with Bama LGA including several towns in an Initiative that will construct 3000 new homes, 10 police stations,18 schools...

“…Health Centers, recruitment of 1500 local hunters as Agro rangers, among others.

“The FG will contribute 67% to the Bama Initiative while Borno State will contribute 33%.”

Legit.ng notes that as a follow-up on this, Osinbajo held a meeting later in the day with the Borno state governor, Kashim Shettima, and other stakeholders at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

To this effect, a statement was also released by Laolu Akande, the senior special assistant to the acting president on media and publicity.

It read in part: "Under the Bama Initiative covering towns such Bama, Banki, Gulumba Gara and others, the Federal Government in partnership with the Borno State government is expected to carry out actual re-construction of houses for the return of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) as well as provide infrastructure such as roads for Bama town and adjoining communities.

The Initiative will also see to the kitting and deployment of thousands of police officers and officers of the National Security, Civil Defence Corps who are expected to be trained for the special task.

Equally, 20 doctors, 100 nurses and other relevant health officers are to be recruited to provide essential health services for the town, in addition to employment of teachers who will be deployed to 18 new schools to be constructed in the areas.

Road re-construction projects are also featured under the Bama Initiative which is now under exploration, including the re-habilitation of Maiduguri-Bama-Daral Jamal-Banki road network.

The welfare of returnees is also a major priority of the plan, ensuring a comprehensive support programme for IDPs as they return. It is expected that the implementation of the plan will kick-off in weeks.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Federal Executive Council on Wednesday, May 3, approved $250 million soft loan for the development of the north-east region of Nigeria which has been ravaged by insurgency.

The council approved a soft loan of $150 million from the African Development Bank (AfDB) and $100 million from African Development Finance (ADF) for Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Initiative (RWSSI).

Also, a grant of five million Euros was approved to finance an Inclusive Basic Service Delivery and Livelihood Empowerment Integrated Programme in five different states in the region.
