Juventus dropped their interest in Matic and turned their attention to Paris Saint-Germain's Blaise Matuidi, as well as Sevilla midfielder Steven N'Zonzi.
Despite being unwillng to sell to a domestic rival, Chelsea allowed Matic to join United as a goodwill gesture because of his contribution to the club's two Premier League titles in the last three years.
Antonio Conte would have preferred to sell Matic to Juventus rather than a domestic rival.
It is however understood that the Serbia international was only interested in a move to Jose Mourinho's sde.
