Okonjo-Iweala reacts to claims that she made utterances against Buhari
- Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala referred to the stories as being spurious and nefarious, as she urged Nigerians to disregard them
- The former finance minister warned the various news outlets carrying the stories to cease and desist from their misleading actions
- Various news outlets had carried a story which claimed that the former minister stated that Nigeria’s recession was caused by the president’s unguided rhetoric and uncultured body language
Nigeria’s former finance minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has denied making statements allegedly indicting president Muhammadu Buhari for the economic situation in the country.
In a post on her Facebook page, the recently appointed director at UK’s Standard Chartered Bank urged Nigerians to disregard all such stories.

She stated: “My attention has been drawn to a spurious and nefarious story circulating on the internet.
“The story makes false claims of utterances against President Buhari.
“I had earlier debunked the same fake news on Jan 5, 2017, but it is obviously in some people's interest to see this falsehood circulate again.
“Please see https://www.facebook.com/NgoziOkonjoIweala/posts/1360512913998969.
"Kindly ignore this. These junk news outlets are hereby warned to cease and desist.”
In a previous post made on January 5 2017, Iweala had stated via her media adviser: “The comments on the performance of the Nigerian economy being circulated by unknown persons and attributed to Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala were not made by her.
“Like the previous fake audio by an imposter pretending to be her, this is another desperate action by mischievous persons.
“The former minister doesn't need anyone to speak for her because, as everyone knows, she is very capable of speaking for herself. We urge the media and Nigerian public to ignore these petty gimmicks.”
Various news outlets had carried a story which claimed that the former minister made comments against Buhari during a media appearance.
They claimed that she stated that Nigeria’s recession was “caused by the president’s unguided rhetoric and uncultured body language."
According to the now discredited rumors, the minister further bashed the president for creating instability with his “unguided statements about how everyone is corrupt and how everyone is going to jail”.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Nigeria’s former minister of finance and coordinator of the economy Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was reappointed as the chair of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.
Gavi is a global health initiative of billionaire Bill Gates and his wife Melinda, set up with the aim of saving children’s lives and protecting people’s health by increasing equitable use of vaccines in third world and developing countries.
Announcing her reappointment, the organization on its website stated that Okonjo-Iweala was re-appointed for another 3-year term due to her instrumental leadership.
