Group condemns Obasanjo, Babangida, Abubakar over alleged plot to replace Buhari in 2019

- A group, DYC, has condemned media reports of purported search for the replacement of President Muhammadu Buhari by former Heads of State all retired Generals – Olusegun Obasanjo, Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar

- The group says such a move is an act of betrayal

- It added that the move is arson against the collective wishes of the populace

Former Heads of State all retired Generals – Olusegun Obasanjo, Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar have been slammed over reports that the trio are considering the likes of former Governor of Kano state and serving Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso; Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto state and former Governors of Cross River and Edo states, Mr Donald Duke and Adams Oshiomole respectively, as replacement for President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

According to the Democratic Youth Congress (DYC), the report that the former presidents were plotting Buhari’s successor is an act of betrayal, Nigerian Tribune reports.

Speaking through its national chairman, Hon. Kassim Mohammed Kassim, DYC said such a move is not only an act of betrayal but arson against the collective wishes of the populace.

Kassim said: “What have Obasanjo, Babangida and Abubakar bequeathed to this country as leaders if not corruption, nepotism, underdevelopment and values laced with of mutual distrust and suspicion which has further compounded our journey to prosperity as a nation.

“Enough is enough. We Nigerian youths have allowed such leaders to mortgage the future of this country. We, Nigerian youths would henceforth use any civil and political will to resist such attempt by past leaders to arrogate to themselves to determine the common destiny of this great nation.”

Kassim, a serving member of the Nasarawa state House of Assembly, representing Akwanga South, said the search for a new president in 2019 is hypocritical and can cause political disharmony in the polity.

He pledged the DYC’s unflinching support to the emergence and continuation in office of President Buhari beyond 2019.

Legit.ng had reported that Obasanjo, Abubakar and Babaginda had met at the home of the latter in Minna, Niger state, on May 2.

The outcome of the meeting was not disclosed but it was believed then that they met to discuss matters affecting the country in the face of agitations and significantly, health of the president.
