MASSOB, BIM fault Kanu’s call for election boycott in Anambra

The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and the Biafra Independent Movement (BIM) have accused Nnamdi Kanu of planning to force the federal government to declare a state of emergency in Anambra state.

The two pro-Biafran groups in a statement on Thursday, August 10, warned that the call by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra for a boycott of the Anambra state governorship election was intended to push the government to declare emergency rule in the state, Punch reports.
The groups also called on the leadership of the IPOB to stop disturbing the south-east zone with its activities, adding that Kanu and IPOB do not have programmes that would lead to the emancipation of the southeast region.
Speaking in Owerri, the Imo state capital, the elders council of BIM led by its spokesperson, Chief Emmanuel Akabekwe, faulted the call by IPOB for a boycott of the Anambra state election.
Akabekwe stated that the call was not in the interest of the struggle for a sovereign state of Biafra which he said MASSOB leader, Ralph Uwazuruike, was committed to.
According to Akabekwe, Uwazuruike would have long supported boycotts of elections in the southeast states if such order had anything to do with the struggle for Biafra or the benefit of the southeast zone.
He said: “Who is Nnamdi Kanu to speak for the Igbo people? He has no capacity to give order that will stand in Igbo land. He is only trying to grab cheap relevance and popularity with the Biafra agitation.

“…We therefore call on every eligible voter in Anambra state to come out en mass without any fear of molestation and exercise their franchise by voting in candidates of their choice. That is their civic responsibility.”
Meanwhile, the federal government has cautioned the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB), and other groups in the country to refrain from disseminating hate speeches.
The caution was given on Thursday, August 10, in Abuja by the director general of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Dr. Garba Abari, Tribune reports. Mr Abari said NOA had in its possession at least three songs already recorded to preach hate in the communities.
NOA DG warned that Nigeria stands the risk of impending crisis if hate and divisive speeches remain unchecked.
