BBC slams Buhari for medical treatment abroad

- The British Broadcasting Cooperation BBC has slammed Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari and other African leaders who have habitual medical trip overseas

- BBC noted that the presidents of Nigeria, Angola, Zimbabwe, Benin and Algeria all have something in common

- Buhari has spent more than four months in London this year getting treatment for an undisclosed illness, causing considerable disquiet at home

The British Broadcasting Cooperation (BBC) has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of ''an apparent lack of faith in the health systems at home''.

According to BBC, Buhari was on the list of five African presidents who frequently and without proper consideration of the consequences travel abroad for medical treatment.

Among others were Presidents Abdelaziz Bouteflika (Algeria), Robert Mugabe (Zimbabwe), Jose Eduardo dos Santos (Angola) and Patrice Talon (Benin), Vanguard reports.

Legit.ng gathered that Buhari was described as the ''first among equals'' in terms of time spent abroad getting medical help.

In the report, BBC quoted Naziru Mikailu, its Abuja editor, as saying the public health system in Nigeria is terrible because of poor funding. Earlier in the year, Buhari spent 49 days in the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile, Buhari has spent more than four months in London this year getting treatment for an undisclosed illness, causing considerable disquiet at home.

He returned to the London on May 7 and has been there since. Buhari received his media team at the Abuja House on Saturday, August 12.

Femi Adesina, Buhari’s spokesman, quoted him as saying ''I feel I could go home, but the doctors are in charge. I’ve now learnt to obey orders, rather than be obeyed.

''I’ve learnt to obey my doctor’s orders, rather than be the one issuing the orders. Here, the doctor is absolutely in charge''.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that Buhari sent his greetings to Nigerians informing them that he would soon be home from London.

The president said this when he received a delegation from his government led by Lai Mohammed, the information and culture minister.
