Saudi Arabia hosts 1.7 pilgrims for the 2017 Hajj amid global recession

- The Saudi Arabian government has announced that the country received at least 1.705 million pilgrims

- The figure, as given by the government, is 367,095 higher than the one of 2016

- The government also reportedly dedicated hospitals for the treatment of pilgrims who fall ill while performing their Hajj rites

The total number of pilgrims for the current Hajj in Saudi Arabia has hit 1.705 million higher than the immediate last exercise with 367,095.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the statistics was released by the Directorate General of Passports and contained in the Saudi Gazette.

Legit.ng learnt that out of the number, 1.602 million pilgrims came by air, 87,685 by land and 14,835 by sea.

The figure of Nigerian pilgrims at the Hajj was put at 91,000.

The report quoted the statistics as saying more than 51,000 personnel belonging to 22 governmental bodies are also currently serving pilgrims round the clock in Mecca, Medina and the Holy sites.

Some of the government agencies are said to be handling issues including inspiration, electricity and water, as well as religious, media and illumination.

This is apart from those handling health, transport, communication and information technology services.

The report also said the General Security Aviation Command conducted a number of aerial inspection on the movement of pilgrims between Medina and Mecca.

According to information from the country, over 16,000 units of blood and blood products are being collected for the treatment of pilgrims who are sick.

It was learnt that nine hospitals in Mecca, four in Arafat and four in Minna have been equipped with highly skilled technicians and experts in the fields of laboratories, as well as blood banks.

Legit.ng earlier reported that all is not too rosy with some of the pilgrims as Hauwa Mohammed from Katsina state was recently duped of the sum of 800 dollars in Medina, Saudi Arabia.

A fraudster pretending to be an official of the Katsina state government reportedly swindled the victim.
