Hundreds of Ondo workers lay siege on hospital over unpaid allowances

- Angry workers have staged a massive protest at the entrance of the Federal Medical Centre in Owo, Ondo state over an 18-month salary arrears

- The workers barricaded the entrance to the hospital and prevented health workers from carrying out their activities

- Some pensioners in the country are also asking for the sack of Chris Ngige, the labour minister, following recent allegations of corruption in the handling of dues

Many casual workers at the Federal Medical Centre in Owo, Ondo state, disrupted activities at the hospital on Wednesday, August 30, 2017, over unpaid entitlements.

The protesters are reportedly angry over their unpaid entitlements in the last 18 months.

Premium Times reports that those who took part in the protest include cleaners, drivers, gardeners and security men and women.

They blocked the gates of the hospital, and stopped medical staff and patients from moving.

Though details of the protest were sketchy at the time of this report, Legit.ng learnt that most states and the federal government are currently challenged with the burden of salaries and emoluments to workers.

Legit.ng reported recently that pensioners, under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), accused the minister of labour, Dr Chris Ngige of nepotism and incompetence.

Specifically, the NUP declared that Ngige was using his position to circumvent the trade union and pension laws to favour his kinsmen.

Briefing the press at the Labour House, Abuja, the chairman, Electricity Sector branch of the NUP, Mr Abel Olas Eikhor, accused the minister of directing the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorates (PTAD) to circumvent the law and pay union dues into the account of an individual who is not a member of the union.
