US commends Nigerian Army's effort in counter-terrorism war

- The United States of America has commended the Nigerian Army for effort in the fight against terrorism

- The U.S said the Nigeria Army has showed perseverance and hard work in its counter-terrorism operations

- The U.S government also reassured the Army that it will continue to support its work in ensuring the insurgents are wiped out in Nigeria

The United States of America on Thursday, August 31, commended the Nigerian Army for its effort in the fight against insurgency raving the north-east.

Speaking to journalists after a closed door meting with the theatre commander of the Operation Lafiya Dole, Attahiru Ibrahim, the U.S ambassador to Nigeria Stuart Symington said he is pleased to witness the hard work done by the Nigerian Army.

Symington who led a congressional delegation from the U.S also thanked Ibrahim, a major general and staff of the command for the brief and the opportunity to discuss the way forward in their operations with them.

He said: “I was pleased to have a chance to lead a delegation of six members of the United States Congress – three senators and three house members – to come and hear about the hard work of the Nigerian Military in Borno State and in northeastern Nigeria.”

“The United States strongly supports the hard work of the Nigerian military in combating terrorism and we are grateful for the chance to be here and to see both and the response to the humanitarian crisis in northeastern Nigeria and the hard work that is being done to confront terrorism,” Symington said.

Responding to the accolade, Ibrahim thanked the US government for its renewed partnership and support for the military.

The major general said: “This intentionally outlined the healthy relationship we have with the United States; they came here to assess our needs for assistance and they have promised they are going to address that.”

“So it goes a long way to tell you how the United States is also extending its hands in the counter insurgency efforts in Nigeria," Attahiru said.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that the vice president Yemi Osinbajo had appreciated the US government for the sale of fighter jets to Nigeria.

Osinbajo in a series of tweets on Monday, August 28, said U.S government is ready to help Nigeria repatriate its funds stolen by the past public officials.

He said: "We have reached out to the US government to help with the repatriation of proceeds of crime and proceeds of corruption."
