IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu placed under surveillance by police

- Police sources have disclosed that the leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has been placed under surveillance

- This is to prevent him from fleeing the country if and when the Federal High Court in Abuja grants the federal government’s wish to revoke his bail

- Also, more riot policemen have been deployed to the south-east and south-south regions to avert a breach of security and maintain law and order

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has reportedly been placed under surveillance by the Nigeria Police Force.

According to top sources who spoke with The Punch, he was placed under surveillance to prevent him from fleeing the country if the court decides to revoke his bail and order his re-arrest for allegedly flouting his bail conditions.

Legit.ng had earlier reported that the federal government had made moves to revoke Kanu’s bail.

Accusing him of flouting his bail conditions, the federal government filed an application asking the court to revoke his bail and direct security agencies to re-arrest him.

Kanu had inaugurated a security outfit, known as Biafra Security Service which the prosecution said constituted a threat to national security.

The police public relations officer, Jimoh Moshood, confirmed that the police had deployed more riot policemen in the south-east and south-south regions as part of measures to prevent a breach of the peace which might be caused by Biafran agitators ahead of the upcoming Anambra State governorship election.

However, he did not confirm if Kanu was under surveillance to prevent him from fleeing the country should the court rule revoke his bail.

Moshood said: “We have made additional deployments, particularly in Anambra state because of the upcoming governorship election and also to other south-east and south-south states to ensure that IPOB did not actualise its threat of stopping the election.

“So also, any pronouncement from the court would be strictly enforced, irrespective of the persons involved. Nobody is above the law, so any court pronouncement would be enforced by the police.”

According to him, any judicial order in respect of Kanu and other agitators would be enforced immediately.

“We are not leaving anything to chance; we are to ensure there is law and order and any pronouncement from the court would be strictly enforced. We are watching the situation closely. We have made enough deployments and we are going to act appropriately,” he added.

The federal government had, in its application filed on August 25, 2017, asked the court to revoke the bail granted Kanu, on the grounds he had flouted the bail conditions.

In reaction, IPOB had vowed to resist any attempt by the federal government to re-arrest Kanu, without first obtaining a court order.

Kanu, in an earlier report by Legit.ng vowed that Nigeria will burn if the federal government attempts to re-arrest him.

Kanu who was reacting to moves by the government to re-arrest him for breaching his bail condition said he has not committed any offence or crime.

He said the bail conditions were unconstitutional as it violated his rights to speak, be heard and to associate with people.
