Nigeria does not need to take permission from foreign countries - Lai Mohammed

The minister of information, Lai Mohammed has said that Nigeria does not require the permission of foreign countries to declare a group as a terrorist organisation.
The minister’s statement was in reaction to the position of some foreign countries regarding the proscription of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) and its declaration as a terrorist group.

The Punch reports that the minister spoke on Sunday, October 1 where he said Nigeria was a sovereign country that has the right to make decisions that concerns it.
He said the country would not get involved in the internal affairs of other country and asked foreign countries to also respect Nigeria’s sovereignty.

He said: “Nigeria is a sovereign country and it does not require the permission of any other country to declare any person or organisation a terrorist just as those countries don’t need the permission of Nigeria to declare any organisation a terrorist one.”
Legit.ng had reported that the United States declared that it does not consider IPOB a terrorist organisation as claimed by Nigeria.
The Punch reports that the status of the agitating organisation was revealed by the spokesperson for the American Embassy in Nigeria, Russell Brooks.
According to Brooks, the US government does not think IPOB is a terrorist group.
The report quoted Brooks as saying further that the US was committed to Nigeria’s unity and would support a peaceful resolution of its crisis.
“The United States Government is strongly committed to Nigeria’s unity. Important political and economic issues affecting the Nigerian people, such as the allocation of resources, are worthwhile topics for respectful debate in a democracy."
