- Some lawyers have called for the arrest of Bassey Akpan, the senator representing Akwa Ibom Northeast district
- The lawyers said the senator should be arrested for threatening to kill their colleague
- They said the colleague carried out a legal duty assigned to him by his principal
Some lawyers have called for the arrest of the former Senator representing Akwa Ibom Northeast senatorial district, Bassey Akpan.
The lawyers under the aegis of Human Rights Lawyers and Civil Society Alliance for Justice in Politics (HRLCSAJP) urged the inspector general of police to immediately effect the arrest of the lawmaker for threatening to assassinate an associate on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) legal team, Ochai Otokpa.
In a statement issued by the deputy chairman of the the group, Lawrence Ojo, the HRCSG said, Otokpa only carried out an assignment given to him by his principal.
Ojo said the PDP legal associate does not deserve the kind of treatment and threat handed to him by Senator Akpan.
He said: "We are asking the inspector general of police to order immediate arrest of Senator Bassey Albert Akpan for invading the office of the National Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) Secretariat located at Wadata House Wuse zone five Abuja, for assaulting and threatening to kill Barrister Otokpa for carrying out a lawful instruction given to him by the party's legal adviser.
"The lawmaker's arrest should be effected because a lawyer should be guided by the ethics of his profession. A lawyer was duly briefed to go and filed a notice of discontinuance of a case in the court of Appeal in Calabar and an affidavit copiously disposed by a staff of the party stating the reasons for the party's withdrawals based on the fact that the judgement does not attack the interest of the party which is 100% right."

NAIJ.com earlier reported that the PDP lawyer accused Senator Akpan of plotting to kill him.
Otokpa in a petition to the inspector general of police said the Senator invaded his office with some thugs and threatened his life.
He said the senator also took picture of him with his phone for withdrawing an appeal by the PDP which called for the sack of a Bassey Etim, a senator expected to replace Akpan.
