A militant group in the Niger Delta region, Adaka Boro Avengers (ABA) has given the group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum corporation (NNPC), Maikanti Baru, a 14-day ultimatum to apologise for disrespecting the minister of state for petroleum resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu and also, appointing only northerners into the oil firm.

The group warned that at the expiry of the ultimatum, it would launch attacks on Bonny, Nembe and Forcasdos trunk lines, The Sun reports.

The group in statement signed by its spokesman, General Edmos Ayayeibo, accused President Muhammadu Buhari of aggravating the fragile peace in the Niger Delta region.

It has come to our notice that president Muhammadu Buhari, and his All Progressives Congress-led administration doesn’t care about the unity of Nigeria. We expected the number one citizen of this country to address the issues affecting every region of Nigeria on independence day, rather, he aggravated the relative peace in the various regions, especially in the Niger Delta," it said.

The ABA faulted the president for the manner in which he speaks to the country, saying he acts like Nigeria was still being ruled by a military regime.

"We voted for him not to blame PDP, but to do what he was promising the people of Nigeria during his campaign, tagged Change.

“All president Muhammadu Buhari’s subordinates and all his appointees are ruling the country as if we are in a military era…

“Nigeria’s oil sector doesn’t belong to the Fulani alone. It belongs to every citizen in this country. The Nigeria unity has broken and the centre can not hold again," the group said.

Meanwhile, the Petroleum Tanker Drivers’ (PTD) branch of NUPENG has reacted to the leaked memo of the minister of state for petroleum, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, to President Buhari.

Kachikwu had accused the group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr Maikanti Baru, of awarding contracts worth over $26 billion without the NNPC board approval which he (Kachikwu) chairs.

The memo dated August 30, also accused Dr Baru of excluding Kachikwu and the board of the NNPC in the management of the corporation.

But the tanker drivers dismissed the allegation and described it as diversionary and deeply political.

The national chairman of PTD, Comrade Salmon Oladiti, in a statement sent to Legit.ng on Friday, October 6, warned against unnecessary politicization and promotion of certain entrenched interests in the oil industry, both in the upstream and downstream sectors, to the detriment of the nation.

Oladiti declared that individuals not comfortable with certain monumental achievements of the NNPC GMD have been working to create confusion in the industry to ensure that Baru was sacked from office.
