- The leaked memo of Dr Ibe Kachikwu to President Muhammadu Buhari is still generating reactions across the country
- The minister of state for petroleum had written the president alleging insubordination on the part of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) boss, Dr Maikanti Baru
- Nigerians have been assured that Buhari will do the right thing concerning the allegations
The Director General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr Osita Okechukwu has reassured Nigerians that President Muhammadu Buhari would do the right concerning the allegations against the group managing director of the NNPC, Dr Maikanti Baru.
The minister of state for petroleum, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, had accused the NNPC boss of awarding contracts worth over $26 billion without the NNPC board approval which he (Kachikwu) chairs.
The accusations were written in a memo sent to president, but was leaked to the media by unknown sources.
Fielding questions from reporters in Enugu over the weekend, Okechukwu, who is a long time ally of the president said: “President Buhari will do the needful and will not allow anyone to dent his image or tarnish his integrity quotient, if the allegations are valid.
“This is his political capital upon which we followed him, upon which Nigerians voted for him and upon which the international community endorsed him.”
He went on to say Buhari’s urgent meeting with Kachikwu shows how serious the president takes the issues raised and suggested that the minister's memo never got to the president before it was leaked to the media.
His words: “The meeting President Buhari had with Kachikwu vindicated some of us who had expressed the candid view that it is possible that those who blocked Kachikwu from seeing Mr President might had blocked the letter from getting to him.
“Otherwise the urgent verification meeting he had with Kachikwu signposts this assumption. Aso Villa has unresolved culture of mix-bag.”
Okechukwu expressed confidence that President Buhari would place public interest above his personal bias, adding that the president would not allow his political capital of integrity quotient to be extinguished by anyone.
He attributed recent events in the polity to “the palace guards, in every palace, who sometimes in this instance, work 100 degrees at variance with Buhari’s public service trajectory. They wittingly or unwittingly fail to recognize the treasury and premium Buhari places on the social contract he has with Nigerians to make a change.”
Meanwhile, the senator representing Kaduna Central senatorial district, Shehu Sani, has reacted to the leaked memo of Kachikwu to President Buhari.
Sani who appeared in Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Wednesday, October 4, urged Buhari to take serious action on the issues raised by the minister of state for petroleum.
Senator Sani stated that if the allegations were not probed, it will spark negative conclusions that the presidency has been hijacked.
