As part of the Nigerian army’s ongoing Operation Crocodile Smile 2 campaign in the southsouth and southwest regions, at least 18 individuals and a bishop have been arrested in Akwa Ibom state for armed robberies, kidnapping and cult activities, Punch reports.
The development was made public by Colonel Aminu Iliyasu, deputy director, army public relations.
NAIJ.com gathers that Iliyasu disclosed that the suspects were apprehended by troops of the army’s 2 Brigade, and that they had been handed over to relevant security agencies.
The suspects were apprehended for allegedly terrorizing various areas in Etim Ekpo local government area, Akwa Ibom state.
Some of the suspects were identified as Bishop Uwah Mfon, Saviour Friday, Nsika Udoh, Akan Monday, Abak Obong and Oyobong Frank.
The army chief stated: “The bishop is believed to be the financier of wanted criminals. He was arrested in Ikot Ibekwe community.
“The suspect is volunteering information about gangs of kidnappers and cult members linked to him.
“All the suspects and recovered items have been handed over to relevant security agencies for possible prosecution while the operation continues.”
In a related development, NAIJ.com previously reported that the Nigerian army said it had arrested over 40 suspects for various offences within Lagos and Ogun states after the launch of Operation Crocodile Smile 2.
The army made this known through a statement on Tuesday, October 17, by the 81 Division spokesperson, Lt.-Col. Olaolu Daudu in Lagos.
According to him, so far, the troops have being carrying out routine activities associated with the exercise seamlessly, along with other sister services, security and paramilitary agencies.
