Herders and farmers set to clash in Nasarawa state

Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN) in Nasarawa state has called on the federal government to quickly intervene over the ‘looming crisis’ between herders and farmers in the state following the exodus of herders displaced from Benue state.
Muhammed Hussaini, the chairman of MACBAN, said the non-availability of grasses, animal feed and water to graze about two million cattle that migrated from Benue into the state, could lead to clashes between herders and farmers.
Speaking at a press conference in Lafia, Hussaini said the cattle from Benue could destroy crops in the area particularly now that farmers were yet to harvest their crops.

According to Daily Trust, he was of the opinion that if something radical was not done, it would be difficult to prevent crisis.
“We cannot accommodate over two million cows in Nasarawa state. We have peace between Fulani herders and farmers in Nasarawa state and we want this peace to continue but the presence of these displaced herders might affect our relationship.
"We are appealing to federal government to intervene in rescuing the situation before it goes out hand," he said.

Legit.ng previously reported that Samuel Ortom, the Benue state governor, on Wednesday, November 1, announced the prohibition of open grazing in the state.
Ortom made this declaration in a broadcast to mark the commencement of the implementation of the anti-open grazing law. The governor called on everyone residing in the state, who is into cattle or livestock business to abide by the new law.
Barely 24 hours after the implementation of the anti-open grazing law in Benue, herdsmen reportedly killed one person and critically injured an elderly man, in a daring attack.
