APC, PDP supporters clash in Bayelsa state

- The caretaker committee chairman of the Brass local government area council declares a curfew in the area

- APC members describe the curfew as a deliberate attempt to whittle down the power and influence of the party in Brass area

A deadly clash between supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and those of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has left three persons injured in Bayelsa state.

The said clash occurred following a disagreement that ensued between rival party members at Twon Brass, the headquarters of Brass local government council area of the state on Thursday, the Punch reports.

The newspaper stated that the fracas began after supporters loyal to APC member in the state House of Assembly, Israel Sunny-Igoli; and PDP members loyal to the caretaker committee chairman of the council, Victor Isaiah, had a disagreement over a carnival.

The chairman, Victor Isaiah, who is of the PDP had declared a curfew in the council area on security grounds.

He was said to have stated that the gathering of persons in the council was illegal due to the curfew.

But the APC members reportedly interpreted the decision of the chairman as a deliberate attempt to whittle down the power and influence of the APC and a former governor, Timipre Sylva, in Brass area.

This resulted in the clash in which rival party members were said to have fought one another with deadly weapons such as guns, cutlasses and other dangerous weapons.

In other news, the Senate committee on Independent National Electoral Commission, on Friday, November 10, said Anambra governorship election will hold on November 18 as scheduled.

Senator Suleiman Nasif, committee chairman of the committee, made this known when he led members of the committee to a meeting with INEC officials, chairmen and secretaries of various political parties in Awka.

According to a report, Nkwachukwu Orji, the resident electoral commissioner in the state, said the commission was ready for the election as planned.
