Google celebrates late Nigerian literary giant Chinua Achebe

Google Doodle celebrated Nigeria writer, critic and professor, late Chinua Achebe on his 87th birthday.

The Wednesday, November 16th's Google Doodle celebrates late Nigerian novelist, critic, and professor, Chinua Achebe on his 87th birthday.

Born Albert Chinụalụmọgụ Achebe in November 16, 1930, Achebe died on March 21, 2013 at the age of 82.

Till today, Achebe is considered to be the father of modern African literature, in Nigeria and beyond.

Known for his distinct African language and unforgettable characters in his book, the author of the world famous book, Things Fall Apart, has written several books and essays.

Most of Achebe's novels focus on the traditions of Igbo society in southeast Nigeria, the coming of Christianity into Nigeria and the effect on African cultures and values.

As a young man passionate about writing, Achebe won a scholarship to study medicine, but changed his studies to English literature at University College (now the University of Ibadan).

He received over 30 honorary degrees from universities in England, Scotland, Canada, South Africa, Nigeria and the United States, including Dartmouth College, Harvard, and Brown University and won several awards.

Some of the notable awards won by the writer include the Commonwealth Poetry Prize (1982), the Man Booker prize (2007), and the the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade

Achebe's last book published in 2012, There Was a Country, was a controversial albeit well detailed account of the Nigerian Civil War from the writer's experience.

Recall that Achebe is not the first Nigerian to be honoured by Google doodle.

Legit.ng previously reported that the Google doodle was used on October 16, 2017 to celebrate Olaudah Equiano, a brave Nigerian who helped stop slave trade.

Equiano, born on 16 October 1746 in Essaka in the Eboe province of southern Nigeria was abducted with his sister at the age of 11 from his home and sold into slavery.
