I am still Zimbabwe’s only legitimate ruler - Mugabe

- Embattled Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe, is allegedly refusing to step aside, despite the military intervention carried out on Wednesday

- 93-year-old Mugabe says he is still the country’s only legitimate ruler, despite attempts by a Catholic priest to negotiate his graceful exit from power

- Despite this, however, Emmerson Mnangagwa, who was ousted as vice-president this month, is said to be mapping out a vision of the country after Mugabe

An intelligence source has disclosed that despite mediation by a Catholic priest to enable his graceful exit, President Robert Mugabe is allegedly insisting that he remains Zimbabwe’s only legitimate ruler, Reuters reports.

A senior political source states that the priest, Fidelis Mukonori, is acting as a middle-man between the embattled president and the generals who seized power on Wednesday, November 15.

Legit.ng notes that the generals claimed that they were targeting criminals in Mugabe’s entourage, and have insisted that their action is not a coup.

Intelligence reports suggest that amidst the brouhaha, Emmerson Mnangagwa, who was ousted as vice president this month, has been mapping out a vision of the country after Mugabe.

Mnangagwa has reportedly been mapping out his plans with the military and opposition for over a year.

Morgan Tsvangirai, the opposition leader who had been receiving cancer treatment abroad also reportedly returned to the country on Wednesday.

The South African government stated that 93-year-old Mugabe spoke to President Jacob Zuma by telephone and told him (Zuma) that he (Mugabe) was fine.

Mugabe also told Zuma that the military had informed him that they were keeping him and his family safe.

While the drama unfolds, the streets of Harare, the nation’s capital has remained calm with people going about their activities under the watch of soldiers.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the grandson of former British prime minster, Winston Churchill, has thrown his support for the military coup ousting Zimbabwe's president, Robert Mugabe.

Nicholas Soames said the military coup in Zimbabwe on Wednesday, November 15, was a relief and freedom from the 'corrupt' ZANU party.

Soames whose father served as the last governor of Southern Rhodesia before it became Zimbabwe also urged Zimbabweans to embrace the moment.
