Young Nigerian fashion designer Oluwakayode Etti who is the founder of clothing brand Skentele by Etti has emerged winner of Vlisco Fashion Fund 2017.
Kayode came top after competing with two other aspiring Fashion designers who showcased their crafts after attaining the top 3 position among 40 others.
Etti initially dreamt of becoming a singer. However, he developed an interest in fashion at an early age, sketching and painting dresses he would later develop after becoming a fashion designer. Etti started his own Afrocentric fashion label Skentele by Etti, which portrayed African designs mixed with western styles.
Vlisco Fashion Fund is an initiative held in a bid to support the dreams of tomorrow’s fashionpreneurs. Africa’s biggest ankara and Hollandis print brand Vlisco through its Fashion facilitation fund dolled out a whooping sum of 2 million naira sponsorship grant and a fashion masterclass to the winner Oluwakayode.
The project involved a tedious and tasking process in which the contestants headed by five top judges in different fields in the fashion industry who took the selected 40 applicants through a rigorous interview in the first round and later given assignments to make business and cocktail outfits using Vlisco fabrics in which the outfits made by these applicants were showcased to the jury which includes:

The fashion fund is one of Vlisco’s brain child initiatives that invest in the African fashion industry, empowering women and young entrepreneurs with the vision of creating a platform that connects Africa’s fashion talent and creativity with the knowledge of and activities of Vlisco in the African and global fashion world.
Vlisco, since its inception in 1846, is notable for their unique textiles and distinctive designs, colours and wax effects; they still create authentic Dutch wax till date.
