Group hails Buhari, Buratai over victory against Boko Haram, calls for community policing (photos)

- A group in Lagos has commended President Muhammadu Buhari and the chief of army staff, Tukur Buratai over successes against Boko Haram

- The group said he recent positive rating is an appraisal of the counter insurgency efforts that has returned a positive verdict

- The group also called for community policing in Nigeria especially the north east and synergy between the military, police, Department of State Services and community leaders

A civil society organisation on Thursday, November 23, commended President Muhammadu Buhari and the chief of army staff over the successes recorded against the Boko Haram terrorist group.

The organisation, Eko Civil Rights Movement said, it acknowledges the giant strides that have been taken by the Nigerian military in defeating Boko Haram.

Speaking in Lagos during a rally to mark the 2017 Global Terrorism Index commissioned by the Institute for Economics and Peace, the executive director of ECRM, Olusayo Olaotun, said the recent positive rating is an appraisal of the counter insurgency efforts that has returned a positive verdict.

Olaotun said the institute has further restored hope in the fact that President Buhari’s counter terrorism approach which has yielded successes in the north east.

He said: "The Institute for Peace has restored our hope with the release of its Global Terrorism Index 2017 which has reaffirmed our faith that terrorism can be defeated by showing that deaths from Boko Haram are on the decline.

We see the Global Terrorism Index as a report to celebrate because it is important to fully appraise the efforts that have gone into achieving such reduction in the casualty rate occasioned by Boko Haram activities," Olaotun said.

He called for synergy between the military, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police and community leaders in intelligence gathering on fleeing members of the terrorist group.

Olaotun also suggested that the federal government to implement the use of community policing as a approach to end terrorism in Nigeria.

"Our suggestion is for both orgainsations to work together in conjunction with the military to adopt this approach which is one of the proactive collaborations between military in terms of providing intelligence, that has kept the South West of the country free from any insurgency," he said.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that the Institute for Economics & Peace had released the 2017 Global Terrorism Index (GTI).

The institute said the GTI monitored and measured impacts of terrorism in 163 countries, which covers 99.7% of the world’s population.

The report also ranked Nigeria fourth among countries experiencing insurgency across the globe.

The GTI however, said Nigeria has succeeded in decreasing death attributed to Boko Haram by 80%.
