Igbo women should go into politics - Uche Azikiwe

- Igbo women have been urged to go into politics, by Prof Uche Azikiwe, wife of Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Nigeria’s first president

- Mrs Azikiwe urged Igbo women to emulate their male counterparts and enter into the political field fearlessly

- She however stated that those who choose not to go into politics, should give their support to those who decide otherwise

Prof Uche Azikiwe, wife of Nigeria’s first President, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, has urged Igbo women to enter the political space and stop shying away from it.

According to The Sun, Mrs Azikiwe made her comments in Nnewi, Anambra state, while attending a one-day international Igbo women conference which was organized by the Ohanaeze Igbo Women Organization Worldwide and the Ezumezu Ndigbo Women Organization Worldwide.

Legit.ng gathers that she urged Igbo women to emulate their male counterparts and not give in to the fear of contesting for political office.

She stated that Igbo women could exploit their numerical strength to achieve their political goals, and urged any woman who chooses not to participate in politics, to support those who decide otherwise.

Azikiwe further called on Igbo women to put pressure on the National Assembly, to approve the 35 per cent representation for women in politics.

In her words: “If you cannot come out, support whoever that comes out among the women. And we must pressurize the National Assembly to approve the 35 per cent representation we demanded.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that Igbo women under the aegis of the Amoji Women Association, Anambra state, mobilised massively in support of Muhammadu Buhari, then presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in order to boost his chances of winning the 2015 election.

The spokeswoman of the group, Bernadine Ifeoma Eloka, said that her people were agitating for the APC because they truly believed that it was the right party with the right candidates to give Nigerians the needed change for a better life.
