Atiku reveals one of APC's winning strategies in 2015 election

- Alhaji Atiku Abubakar's resignation from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was the biggest political news out of Nigeria last week

- Reactions have continued to emanate from different quarters regarding the former vice president's resignation as a member of the ruling party

Nigeria's former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has revealed one of the APC's winning strategies in the 2015 election.

Responding to an inquiry from one of his followers on micro-blogging site, Twitter, Atiku subtly revealed that APC chieftains were asked to post their food on social media to prove that they are humble politicians.

The Twitter user who is a U.S.-based Nigerian literary critic, Ikhide Ikheloa, had asked Atiku if he was drinking garri in a photo posted by the former vice president.

“No sir, it’s cornflakes. The photo was taken in 2014, when it was compulsory to post our food on Twitter and Instagram,” Atiku wrote.

Atiku's revelation brings to mind a viral picture in 2014 of President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo drinking tea from milo sachets.

The picture was touted to mean Buhari and Osinbajo are humble people and helped win some sections of the public to their side.

Atiku caused a stir in Nigeria's political circles last week when he resigned his membership from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“The party we put in place has failed and continues to fail our people, especially our young people. How can we have a federal cabinet without even one single youth.

“A party that does not take the youth into account is a dying party. The future belongs to young people,” the former vice president said in a statement posted on his Facebook page.

Meanwhile, Lagos-based human rights lawyer, Festus Keyamo, has said the excuse Atiku gave in his widely circulated statement for leaving the APC, was not honourable.

Keyamo who made the statement on social media via his verified Twitter page, said the former vice president should have simply admitted that he left the APC in search of another political party's presidential ticket ahead of the 2019 presidential elections.

His words: “The starting point of Atiku’s presidential bid would’ve been to simply admit that he left APC in search of another party ticket. Nigerians know that already.

“It would’ve been more honourable than giving some zigzag reasons to justify his zigzag movements across political parties.”
