- The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is the only truly democratic party in Nigeria, according to the party's national caretaker committee chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi
- Makarfi is of the opinion that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is afraid to hold a national convention because of its anti-democratic tendencies
The chairman of the national caretaker committee of the PDP, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has chided the ruling APC for its refusal to hold national convention, stressing that the party was afraid.
Makarfi made the statement on Tuesday, December 5, in Abuja, when he received a delegation from the steering committee of the National Institute of Legislative Studies led by its chairman, Aminu Shagari.
“You have prayed for a successful convention of the PDP. We are not afraid. We are not APC, we are not afraid to hold convention. We are not afraid to hold meetings and convention because we are democratic,” Makarfi told his guests.
He stated that he was aware that the procedure for legislation was long and cumbersome, adding that the voting pattern could however be improved.
He added that the process of lawmaking “is not so democratic and the problem facing Nigeria goes beyond ‘nay’ and ‘yea’.”
He further called for sensitive issues to be given priority in lawmaking adding that if the situation does not change, “we will face the consequences down the line.”
Meanwhile, the deputy national publicity secretary of the APC, Comrade Timi Frank, has said that the leadership of the party should be remorseful following the resignation of the former vice president Atiku Abubakar and many others from the ruling party.
Comrade Frank's comment is contained in a statement sent to NAIJ.com on Monday, December 4, where he stated that he had warned and predicted the recent development in the APC.
Comrade Frank warned that the display of arrogance by some party leaders like Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state, will further bring misfortune to APC.
He went on to say it is high time the APC realizes that politics is about number, stressing that the what is going on in the party “led some of us out of PDP in those days but we have now realized that it is even worse in APC.”
He predicted that if the impunity in the ruling party is not addressed on-time, the APC may witness the mother of all defections to opposition parties soon.
