Governors in alleged plot to prevent IBB, GEJ from influencing delegates at PDP convention

- There is anxiety among some PDP members over reported plans by governors from the party to hijack the party’s structure

- PDP governors insist their mission is to change the old order

- They said they won’t allow the imposition any pre-determined agenda on delegates

Governors on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have reportedly hatched a plan to stop Ibrahim Babangida and former president, Goodluck Jonathan, from influencing delegates at the party’s convention where its national chairman is to emerge.

The plan, according to The Nation, is to compile a unity list of candidates who delegates will vote for and the said unity list may be out on Friday, December 8, about 24 hours to the December 9 convention.

Consequently, there is anxiety in the camp of ex-vice-president, Atiku Abubakar, whose main backers are Babangida and Jonathan over the governors’ grip on the party.

But the governors are believed to have dismissed fears that they are out to hijack the party.

They insisted that their mission is to change the old order.

A governor, who spoke in confidence, said: “We want to have a stress-free elective national convention. We have been spending the past few days to build consensus on how to preserve the unity of the party.

“As I talk to you, we are working on a “Unity List” which will accommodate all interests and make the convention great.

“The list will also correct the perception of the loyalists of Babangida and Jonathan that we are out to destroy the party. This is our own way of checkmating the forces who have held the party hostage since 1998.

“The speculations about use of money are unfounded. As a new generation of leaders in PDP, we know what is good for the party too. We won’t allow the imposition any pre-determined agenda on delegates."

Meanwhile, PDP leaders from the north have advised delegates from the region to only vote aspirants from the south-west region for the chairmanship position in the upcoming national convention of the party scheduled for Saturday, December 9.

This was the position of the Northern Elders and Leaders Forum after a marathon meeting in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja on Thursday, November 30.

In a communique issued at the end of the meeting and seen by NAIJ.com, the forum which was well attended by notable elders and leaders of the party from all the states of the northern region, noted that capable and competent aspirants from the southwest should be identified and supported for the chairmanship position.
