Nigeria Police organises #SupportSARS rally to counter #EndSARS protest

- The #EndSARS campaign on Nigerian Twitter last week seems to have gotten to the Nigeria Police authorities

- The hashtag was trending for almost 72 hours on Nigerian Twitter prompting the police authorities to intervene

- The police have hurriedly put together it's #SupportSARS rally to counter the offline #EndSARS protest scheduled to hold today

A report by Sahara Reporters have detailed how the Nigeria Police Force is planning to counter-protest the nationwide #EndSARS rally on Monday, December 11, with a demonstration of their own, tagged #SupportSARS.

According to the report, the police have been circulating the hashtag #SupportSARS on social media and have called on media organizations to report on their rally in Abuja supporting the police.

The rally is coming on a day the #EndSARS protest is meant to hold, prompting suggestions that the police authorities are hell bent on disrupting it.

SARS have been accused of extortion, harassment, intimidation and killings by thousands of Nigerians across the nation

NAIJ.com gathered that the #SupportSARS rally is meant to kick-off at the popular Eagle Square in Abuja, a stone throw from the Unity Fountain, where the #EndSARS protesters are meant to take off.

Supporters of the #SupportSARS campaign have also taken to Twitter to express their suport for the movement.

Despite repeated calls by Nigerians on social media for the police to disband the squad, the Inspector General of Police Ibrahim Idris ignored the calls, but immediately announced a reorganization of the controversial police unit.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Senate has mandated its ad-hoc committee on security to investigate the issue of human rights abuse by SARS and make useful recommendations.

Senator Isah Misau moved the motion while citing orders 42 and 52 and speaking on the recent happenings with the SARS and the public which according to him, needed urgent intervention.
