- Goodluck Jonathan has called on PDP members to be united as the party has to make sacrifices
- He congratulated those who won leadership positions in the party during the recently held national convention
- He called on the new leaders to be magnanimous and aim to carry everybody along
Former president Goodluck Jonathan has congratulated Prince Uche Secondus on his election as the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The PDP had its convention on Saturday, December 9, with Secondus emerging as chairman although there were reports of irregularities.
In a statement issued on Sunday, December 10, by Ikechukwu Eze who is the former president's spokesperson, said Jonathan called for the party members to be united.
He urged them to put the party first as they all have sacrifices to make for the progress of the party.
He said: “I congratulate the newly elected members of the National Working Committee of our great party led by Prince Uche Secondus and wish them a successful tenure as they seek to reposition our great party.
“I reiterate that the only way to prove that this is victory for the PDP and all our members is for the new leaders to be magnanimous and aim to carry everybody along, for we cannot achieve our mission and aspirations, unless we unite as a family.
“To the rest of us, let us make sacrifices, put our differences behind us and accept this as a new dawn that will take our party to greater heights.”
NAIJ.com had reported that Atiku Abubakar slammed his former party All Progressives Congress (APC) and described it as the ‘enemy’ of the people of Nigeria.
The Punch quoted a statement by Atiku Media Office as congratulating Secondus and warning the opposition party to avoid making mistakes that would allow APC continue in office.
Atiku noted that Secondus and other newly elected national officials of the PDP should run an all-inclusive administration where the various interests within the party would be accommodated.
