FG reaffirms One China policy, warns officials against recognising Taiwan

- The Nigerian government reiterates that it recognises only Beijing as China’s seat of government

- FG maintains that it doesn’t recognise Taiwan as an independent territory

- It insists that all official and private trips by government officials to Taiwan must be cleared by the SGF

The federal government on Thursday, December 14, reaffirmed its One China policy as part of its drive to strengthen and deepen the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

This was contained in a circular sent to Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) by the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

NAIJ.com gathered that the circular stated that the federal government does not recognise Taiwan as an independent territory.

The circular read in part: “As part of government’s drive to strengthen and deepen bilateral relationships with China, it has become imperative to reaffirm Nigeria’s position on the (One China Policy).’’

The secular further clarified that: ‘‘the federal government recognises that Beijing remains the only seat of the government representing the whole China and Taiwan is an inalienable part of its territory.’’

“Mr President has directed that the term “Republic of China (Taiwan) shall not be used in official communications and pronouncement.

“And all official and private trips by government officials to Taiwan must be cleared by the SGF.’’

The circular enjoined all MDAs to bring its contents to the notice of all concerned for immediate compliance.

NAIJ.com previously reported that President Muhammadu Buhari expressed delight at the mutually beneficial cooperation that exists between Nigeria and China.

In a statement on Saturday, October 14, by his special adviser on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, the president congratulated China for "becoming an indispensable force in the comity of nations."

The congratulatory message was contained in a letter Buhari sent to President Xi Jinping of the People's Republic of China, on the occasion of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC).
