Buhari promises improved investment in health sector

- President Buhari promised to invest more in the country's health sector

- He said this will stop the loss of well trained medical professionals to other countries

- Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) wants the president to establish medical universities in each of Nigeria’s geo-political zone

President Muhammadu Buhari has promised that the federal government will increase investment in the health sector.

According to Femi Adesina, special adviser to the president on Media and Publicity, the president said this has become necessary if the country wants to discourage its well trained professionals from leaving for other countries.

Legit.ng gathered that President Buhari made the promise while receiving the executive members of Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) at State House, Abuja, on Thursday, December 21.

He appreciated the concern expressed by the association on the state of the health sector in the country

"We will do our best to work on your recommendations, and increase investment in the health sector," the president promised.

Professor Ngim E. Ngim, the president of MDCAN, stated that the association consists of trainers, researchers, leaders and major stakeholders in health care, who are concerned about the well-being of the health sector.

He appealed to President Buhari to act on the resolution of inter-professional rivalry in health care in the country

He noted that a panel, headed by Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, had been convened in 2014 to look into the issue but nothing has been done since then.

MDCAN also urged the president to increase health financing, reconstitute the governing board of Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and establish medical universities in each geo-political zone of the country.

Legit.ng previously reported that the national president, Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Prof. Mike Ogirima stated that.three hundred Nigerian doctors left the country in 2016.

He said more doctors have joined the migration train this year. He did not give any statistics.

However, there are reports that 500 doctors sat for qualifying foreign medical exams to qualify them to work outside Nigeria.

Ogirima made this revelation at the association’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on Thursday, December 14, in Lagos.

The meeting had as its theme, “Exodus of Healthcare Professionals, Time to Act is Now”.
