The silence is deafening - Nigerians fume over herdsmen killings in Benue

- Nigetrians have reacted to the massive protest embarked on by Benue residents

- The residents are protesting against the continued killing of Benue people by some herdsmen

- Nigerians have called on the federal government to intervene on the matter and stop the killings by the herdsmen

Residents of Makurdi, Benue state capital embarked on a massive protest against the killing allegedly perpetrated by some herdsmen in the state on Wednesday, January 3.

The protest currently being carried out youths in the state have witnessed burning of tyres and stick in city.

The youths in their scores called on the federal and state government to intervene in the killings perpetrated by the herdsmen in Benue.

Also the killings have caused an outrage on social media microblogging site - Twitter.

Citizens across Nigeria have condemned government 'silence' and neglect in the issue of herdsmen crisis across Nigeria.

Some of these Nigerians including the former minister of education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, inquired what is stopping the federal government from tackling the menace caused by the herdsmen.

Ezekwesili said: "What is it that has so far hindered FG .@AsoRock @MBuhari from effectively tackling the Fulani Herdsmen crisis in states like Kaduna&Benue? Is it Intelligence failure? Is it Surveillance Failure? Is it Investigation failure? Is it Prosecution failure? Or lack of Political Will?"

Another Twitter user, Bukky Shonibare said: "@MBuhari, @ProfOsinbajo: Citizens are being butchered in communities of Benue State. Several now IDPs. That of the early hours of today was from Tse Igbudu Taraka to Bakin Kota. Children, inclusive. These pictures are from an eye witness who managed to escape. Please act fast."

NAIJ.com earlier reported that the police in Benue have arrested eight herdsmen over the death of 10 persons and seven livestock guards in Guma and Logo local governments of the state on Monday, January 1.

The Benue state police spokesperson, Moses Yamu, the suspects were arrested following their connection to the attacks.

Yamu said, the command had made additional deployments to the troubled area to forestall further occurrence and restore confidence of the people.
