After a decade of total dominance in the football world by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, it seems the torch of the best footballer is ready to be passed on.
Already Cristiano Ronaldo is showing signs of slowing down while Lionel Messi is looking a yard slower although that speed of thought is ever shining.
With five Ballon d'Or awards apiece in the last 10 years for Ronaldo and Messi and countless Champions League titles, it seems their time is coming to an end.
There are five players who have proven over the last few years to be worthy of the award;
The only player to be named third best twice after the two superhuman is Neymar and he has age on his side to win the award.
With Ronaldo and Messi are on the wrong side of 30, Neymar is just 25-years-old and currently playing for the team with the best squad in world football.
A win for Brazil at the World Cup in Russia will see him win the Ballon d'Or award without a fuss.
2. Kylian Mbappe
The PSG star has proven himself domestically and in Europe for the second season running.
At just 18-years-old, Mbappe is the youngest on the list and with a good team, he looks like the next best after the two La Liga stars and neymar.
3. Paulo Dybala
He has endured a poor run of form of late but there is no denying Dybala's ability. Even Messi admits that the star nicknamed 'The Jewel' is some talent.
He plays for one of the best team in Europe in Juventus who he led to the Champions League final last season. He needs to get his head straight and focus on harnessing his potential under a wonderful manager like Max Allegri.
A Champions League win and fine World Cup performance is all that is needed for Dybala to win the top prize this year.
4. Harry Kane
If you beat Ronaldo and Messi to the most number of goal for club and country in a year, you are undoutedly some talent. Kane has proven himself over the last three years to be a wonderful striker and probably the best number 9 in the world.
He will most likely not win the biggest trophies at Tottenham but a move to Real Madrid could see him have a shot at the Ballon d'Or this year.
5. Eden Hazard
Is there a better natural talent in the EPL? Probably no.
Hazard has been Chelsea's best player since joining in 2012 and with two Premier League titles and one Europa League, he is one of the best in the business.
He need to prove himself in the Champions League round of 16 against Barcelona and make a name for himself at the World Cup with Belgium.
Other notable mentions for this list are Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele, Robert Lewandowski, Luis Suarez and Kevin De Bruyne.
